Mic Crenshaw drops 17th album, announces Hawthorne Theatre performance
Mic Crenshaw, a veteran in the world of independent Hip-Hop, has recently unveiled his latest album, Retribution. This musical project serves as a testament to his unique journey, blending artistry with activism over the course of more than three decades. Inspired by the likes of Public Enemy, Paris, Dead Prez, and Poor Righteous Teachers, Mic uses his platform to engage with and reflect upon the social and political issues of our time through the medium of Hip-Hop lyricism.
Since his early days with the Portland Live band Hungry Mob in 1993, Mic Crenshaw has been known for his unwavering commitment to incorporating political commentary and socially conscious messages into his music. Gabriel Toedros of Seattle’s Abyssinian Creole praises Mic as one of the most consistent artists in the region when it comes to delivering impactful messages through his music.
Drawing inspiration from the tumultuous current events of today’s world, Mic Crenshaw collaborates with a diverse group of artists on his latest album, including Toni Hill, Melissa Barrison, Jonny Cool, Trox, and many others. The album’s production is chiefly handled by Jonny Cool, who also worked on the first three singles: “We Are Tigers,” “Retribution,” and “Afrika,” as well as the most recent release, “Ice Twice Baby.” The track “Ice Twice Baby,” featuring Anthony Rivera and Drew Dru, showcases Mic’s signature rapid-fire delivery, complemented by Anthony and Drew’s call-and-response style, resulting in a powerful and timely anthem.
In a show of support for his new album, Mic Crenshaw is set to perform live alongside the legendary Gza of the Wu Tang Clan at the Hawthorne Theatre on May 12, 2026. Originally hailing from Chicago and spending time between the Windy City and Minneapolis, Mic now calls Portland, Oregon his home. Apart from his music career, Mic is also an accomplished poet, educator, media producer, and activist, dedicated to effecting positive change since his teenage years.
Mic Crenshaw’s impact extends beyond his music, as he is a co-founder of GlobalFam, a record label and entertainment company, and serves as the Executive Director of Education Without Borders. Through these organizations, Mic and his team are actively involved in supporting education, music, and art initiatives globally. A notable project includes the establishment of a computer center for underprivileged youth in Burundi, Central Africa, underscoring Mic’s commitment to using art and culture as tools for social change.
In conclusion, Mic Crenshaw’s latest album, Retribution, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy as an artist who seamlessly combines creativity with activism. Through his music, Mic continues to engage with and provoke thought on pressing social and political issues, solidifying his position as a respected voice in the world of independent Hip-Hop.
