Peter Klett of Candlebox discusses the creation of “Far Behind”

Peter Klett, known for his time with Candlebox, reflects on his experiences during the grunge era, rejecting the notion that the Seattle scene influenced his guitar style. Despite thriving in the ’90s, Klett’s musical roots lie in ’70s hard rock and rock, as evidenced by Candlebox hits like You and Far Behind from their debut album. Looking back, Klett admits to having a “huge ego” in his youth and regrets his reliance on alcohol.

The band’s rapid rise to fame created a surreal bubble for Klett, where touring replaced the traditional paths of settling down and starting a family. Despite initially considering retirement, Candlebox now plans to tour extensively and is currently working on new music. While Klett’s musical tastes have evolved to favor lo-fi chill music over heavy rock, he still finds joy in the creative process of mixing music in a studio.

Klett’s love for music began at a young age, influenced by John Denver, albums like Dark Side of the Moon and Houses of the Holy introduced by his siblings, and the experience of standing outside his brother’s room to listen to new records. This early exposure fueled his passion for music and later drew him towards learning the guitar.

In hindsight, Klett reminisces about the awe-inspiring experience of Woodstock ’94, where he found himself surrounded by a multitude of famous individuals. From touring alongside iconic bands like Aerosmith and Metallica to stepping into Geddy Lee’s shoes, Candlebox’s journey in the ’90s was marked by a diverse range of musical experiences and achievements.

Despite the challenges and pitfalls that come with success at a young age, Klett’s dedication to music remains unwavering. While his personal tastes may have shifted, his commitment to creating and sharing music endures. With new projects on the horizon, Candlebox continues to carve out their unique place in the music industry, guided by Peter Klett’s enduring passion for music and creativity.
