John R. Miller reveals upcoming album titled ‘The Great Unknowing’ and shares new song ‘Tollbooth’
John R. Miller, a well-respected and admired singer/songwriter, has revealed exciting news about his upcoming fifth studio album, titled ‘The Great Unknowing.’ This highly anticipated album is set to be released on physical formats on June 5th and digitally on July 17th via Rounder Records. Known for his deeply rooted Americana style, Miller’s work is revered for its raw authenticity and unvarnished imperfection that resonates with listeners.
After a year spent demoing songs at home and hitting the road to test out his new material, Miller found himself craving a change of scenery to fuel his creativity. He decided to seek inspiration at Leon Russell’s iconic Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Immersed in the rich musical history of the city, Miller was able to tap into a new creative energy and expand his sonic horizons beyond his Americana roots.
The first track off the album, titled ‘Tollbooth,’ recently premiered with Under The Radar. The haunting track paints a vivid picture of desolation, with Miller’s evocative lyrics exploring themes of uncertainty and existential longing. The accompanying video, filmed at The Church Studio In Session, offers an intimate glimpse into Miller’s soulful performance, enveloped in melancholic fiddle and ethereal guitar tones.
‘Tollbooth’ was inspired by Miller’s observations of American decay during his travels on the road. The changing landscapes and shifting scenery served as poignant reflections of the passing of time and the impermanence of places. Co-produced with Adam Meisterhans and featuring a band of talented Tulsa musicians, including John Fullbright on piano and keyboards, the album seamlessly weaves together acoustic intimacy with expansive soundscapes, creating a rich tapestry of musical textures.
Recorded on the studio’s vintage Neve 8068 console, once owned by Daniel Lanois and used on iconic recordings like Bob Dylan’s ‘Time Out of Mind,’ the album strikes a delicate balance between spontaneity and meticulous detail. The resulting sound is both grounded and otherworldly, showcasing Miller’s growth as an artist and collaborator.
In a deliberate nod to the past, ‘The Great Unknowing’ will be released on physical formats first, with a focus on vinyl, CDs, and lossless audio. Miller hopes to foster a deeper connection with his audience and encourage support for local record stores, emphasizing the importance of preserving the culture of brick-and-mortar shops as hubs of creativity and human connection.
As Miller embarks on his tour in support of the album, fans can look forward to experiencing his new sound live on stage. With ‘The Great Unknowing,’ John R. Miller invites listeners on a journey of introspection and exploration, showcasing his evolution as an artist unafraid to take risks and embrace change.
