on. Whilst it might have seemed like a last gasp for hair metal in 1992, Hardline’s frontman Johnny Gioeli has kept the name (and the flame) burning. ‘Shout’ is a particularly strong addition to the back catalogue.
The band has faced changing personnel over the years, and ‘Shout’ introduces Luca Princiotta on guitar to the line-up, joining Alessandro Del Vecchio on keys, Ana Portalupi on bass, and Marco Di Salvia on drums. Del Vecchio’s work in songwriting and production is evident throughout the album, adding a magical touch.
The album opens with the title track ‘Shout,’ delivering one of the most exceptional pieces in the melodic hard rock genre, with Gioeli showcasing renewed vigor and adding Billy Idol-style growls. The momentum is maintained with tracks like ‘Rise Up,’ featuring a purposeful solo from Princiotta, and ‘It Owns You,’ a solid rock number.
A standout moment on the album is the Scorpions cover ‘When You Came Into My Life,’ a powerful ballad that showcases Gioeli’s impassioned vocals, reminiscent of classic Winger. However, a slight misstep occurs with the inclusion of ‘Glow,’ a somewhat lackluster ballad that detracts from the album’s overall energy.
‘Reise Above No Fear’ stands out as a rocker that is hard to beat, while ‘Welcome To The Thunder’ serves as a fitting gig opener that encapsulates the essence of the band’s current musical direction.
Despite some familiar riffs and melodies, the album exudes enthusiasm and delivers its tracks with great traction. Some songs even veer into a bluesy swagger, reminiscent of bands like Whitesnake and House of Lords.
‘Shout’ marks a triumphant return to form for Hardline, recapturing their former glory with undeniable energy and passion. While the band had to cancel UK dates last November, they are currently touring in Europe, leaving fans hopeful for their return.
In conclusion, ‘Shout’ by Hardline is an unstoppable force, blending elements of classic rock with a modern edge to create a powerful and engaging listening experience. Established fans and new listeners alike will find something to love in this album, making it a must-have for any melodic hard rock enthusiast.
