A surprise new album from Charley Crockett dropping at 8:00 pm Central on an ordinary Tuesday night? Absolutely. Charley Crockett himself addressed the surprise release on Instagram, emphasizing his freedom to release music whenever he pleases, stating, “You can drop a f-cking record whenever the f-ck you want. And what’s more important to me is dropping all this really good art right now.” Reports had already surfaced before his previous album, Age of the Ram, was released earlier in the month that Crockett was already hard at work on his next project. Allegedly recorded at the historic Norman Petty studio in Clovis, New Mexico, the location where Buddy Holly recorded his iconic hits, as well as Shooter Jennings’ studio, Crockett was eager for the world to hear his latest creation.

Upon initial inspection, some thought that the surprise album Clovis might have been accidentally or maliciously leaked. The copyright details and the absence of his previous labels, Island Records and Son of Davy, raised further questions. Surprisingly, it was revealed that Charley Crockett is no longer associated with Island Records. The major label that was behind his “Sagebrush Trilogy” series parted ways with Crockett after the release of Age of the Ram on April 3rd. Despite being label-less now, his latest album, Clovis, is attributed to the label “$10 Cowboy,” as Crockett has taken charge of his career and is self-managing, allowing him the freedom to release music on his own terms.

“Produced by Crockett and co-produced by Shooter Jennings, Clovis is a 14-track venture that was recorded at the historical Norman Petty Studio in New Mexico. Norman Petty, known for recording Buddy Holly’s renowned songs, gave the studio its legendary status. The preservation of the studio’s 1950s ambiance adds to its historical significance, making it a rare recording setting in the music industry. While Crockett’s decision to release the album as a surprise caught even those closest to him off guard, it reflects his creative freedom. A single post on Instagram featuring a man in prison reaching for a set of keys prior to the album release hinted at Crockett’s feelings of confinement. Now, with the release of Clovis, he has broken free from those constraints.

Clovis, at the moment, is available exclusively on Spotify. With the promise of a detailed album review upon further listening, this surprise has left fans eager to dive into Charley Crockett’s latest musical offering.”
