Shearwater reveals information about upcoming album, The New World
Shearwater’s latest album, The New World, comes as a follow-up to their 2022 release, The Great Awakening, marking the return of Jonathan Meiburg, Emily Lee, and Dan Duszynski as they delve deeper into their musical landscape with nine new tracks.
The album’s initial singles, “Daydream Unbeliever” and “More and More,” provide a glimpse into the thematic essence of the entire collection. Meiburg offers insight into the inspiration behind the songs, expressing the universal feeling of waking up to a world in turmoil and the desire to find a starting point to navigate through chaos. He mentions that both tracks arose from a sense of unease, aiming to provide solace and connection to listeners who may resonate with these sentiments.
In a departure from their previous albums released under Sub Pop and Matador, Shearwater chose to take a different route with The New World. Instead of traditional methods, the band decided to crowdfund, produce, and distribute the album independently through Secretly Distribution. This decision allowed them the freedom to explore their creative vision without external constraints, resulting in a truly authentic and innovative musical experience.
The recording process for The New World spanned various locations, including London, Berlin, New York, and the band’s home base in Texas. The album features a diverse array of instrumental contributions from talented artists such as Shahzad Ismaily, Doug Wieselman, Farouz Zriek, Leo Abrahams, Mamadou Kouyate, Mahamadou Tounkara, Moctar Kouyate, and Thor Harris, each adding their unique touch to the overall sound and atmosphere of the tracks.
With a thought-provoking cover art and a tracklist that includes songs like “Even Song,” “A Mink in the Dusk,” and “The Only Sound I’m Afraid Of,” The New World promises to take listeners on a captivating and immersive journey through Shearwater’s evolving musical landscape. From introspective ballads to intricate compositions, the album showcases the band’s growth and experimentation, inviting audiences to explore the depths of their emotions and reflections.
As Shearwater continues to push the boundaries of their sound and storytelling, The New World stands as a testament to their artistic evolution and unwavering commitment to creating music that resonates deeply with listeners. Embracing change and embracing new creative horizons, the band invites audiences to embark on a sonic adventure unlike anything they’ve experienced before. With its rich tapestry of sounds, emotions, and ideas, The New World is a testament to Shearwater’s enduring legacy in the world of alternative music.
