Manchester guitarist Vini Reilly founded the Durutti Column in 1978, becoming the first band signed to Factory Records by Tony Wilson. Their unique sound, characterized by Reilly’s intricate guitar work that infused jazz and folk elements into ’80s new wave, has left a lasting impact on music. While they never achieved mainstream success, their influence can be seen in modern music, with artists like Blood Orange sampling their work in “The Field” and Harry Styles acknowledging their impact on his own music. Now, after 16 years, the Durutti Column is making a comeback with their latest album, Renascent.

For this new record, Reilly teamed up with producer and instrumentalist Keir Stewart and drummer/percussionist Bruce Mitchell. Renascent features a revamped version of the band’s 1980 track “For Belgian Friends,” now titled “For Friends Everywhere.” The album, with cover art by veteran Factory designers Mark Holt and Hamish Muir, continues the Durutti Column’s legacy. The lead single, “Liars,” is a reflective piece that encapsulates the classic Durutti Column sound, incorporating a mature perspective gained over time. The tracklist for Renascent includes songs like “Echoes In The Memory,” “Your Shadow At Morning,” and “Time Present And Time Past,” showcasing the band’s evolution while staying true to their roots.

Scheduled for release on July 31st via London, Renascent has already garnered attention. The Harry Styles-curated Meltdown Festival will feature a special tribute show titled “For Vini: A Tribute To The Durutti Column,” where Renascent producer and instrumentalist Keir Stewart, along with past collaborators Liz Rossi, Caolfhionn Rose, and Sam Morris, will perform songs from the band’s extensive catalog.

The return of the Durutti Column with Renascent marks an exciting moment for fans of their distinctive sound. With a blend of nostalgia for their past work and a fresh perspective on new tracks, the album promises to captivate listeners once again. As the band continues to influence contemporary music and inspire artists across genres, their enduring legacy in the music industry remains undeniable.
