Air Force Releases Iron Maiden Cover of “Strange World”

Featuring former Iron Maiden drummer Doug Sampson among its ranks, the band shares the backstory of covering Iron Maiden’s classic track. It was Tony Hatton’s idea to cover “Strange World,” a long-time favorite of Chop Pitman. Given that their drummer, Doug Sampson, played on the original Iron Maiden version during the Soundhouse Tapes sessions, the band decided to try their hand at it. Vocalist Lino delivered a stellar performance, adapting the song to suit AIRFORCE’s style.

Chop Pitman sought out Steve Harris’ approval, who suggested inviting Dave Sullivan, one of Iron Maiden’s early guitarists, to join the recording, resulting in two former Iron Maiden members playing on the track. Chop’s ingenious idea to incorporate the outro of another classic Iron Maiden track, “Remember Tomorrow,” was well-received by both Steve and Dave. This recording of “Strange World” became even more poignant as it was played at the funeral of their late friend Paul Di’Anno, making it a heartfelt tribute to him.
