Starbucks employees in St. Louis thwart robbery and lose their jobs
Two Starbucks employees recently found themselves in a harrowing situation when they bravely fought off two armed robbers in a daring act captured on camera. The incident unfolded at a Starbucks store near St. Louis University in December 2023, when two hooded men entered the establishment with criminal intent. One of the robbers brandished a gun at the employees, prompting the 10 workers and a single customer to comply with their demands, fearing for their lives.
The situation escalated when one of the robbers made a move towards the cash register, pushing a female worker out of the way. In a bid to defend their store and their lives, employee Michael Harris, stationed at the drive-thru, attempted to open the register but was unable to access the cash due to not having managerial authority. This led to one of the robbers assaulting Harris, leaving him fearing for his life in what he described as a life or death scenario.
In a remarkable turn of events, another employee, Devin Jones-Ransom, realized that the gun the robber wielded was fake and decided to take action. Jones-Ransom lunged at the armed intruder, causing the gun to break upon impact with the window of the drive-thru. The ensuing scuffle between the employees and the robbers was captured by security cameras and showed the duo overpowering the criminals, leading to the arrest and conviction of the robbers, Joshua Noe and Marquis Porter-Doyle.
Despite their heroics in thwarting the robbery and ensuring the safety of their colleagues and customers, Harris and his co-worker were terminated from their positions at Starbucks weeks after the incident. The coffee chain stated that the employees had failed to adhere to company policy, which prioritizes complying with demands and avoiding actions that may escalate risks in high-stress situations. While Starbucks expressed relief that no one was seriously harmed during the incident, Harris argued that such policies could deter employees from protecting themselves when faced with dangerous situations.
Harris’ lawyer criticized Starbucks’ policy, suggesting that it could potentially embolden future robbery attempts if workers are discouraged from defending themselves in threatening situations. The lawyer emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to protect their lives when faced with imminent danger, highlighting the need for a more nuanced approach to handling such complex and unpredictable scenarios. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by frontline workers in customer service roles and raises questions about the appropriate responses in high-risk situations.
