The annual RockthePav music festival in Broadstairs is set to make a return this summer, promising a day of live music performances to help raise funds for an important cause. Scheduled for July 5 at the Pavilion in Harbour Street, this event has been a consistent supporter of the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and aims to generate awareness and essential donations for the cause.

What sets this festival apart is that it is entirely free to attend, with attendees encouraged to contribute voluntary donations throughout the day to support the charity. Last year’s festival managed to raise an impressive £1,200, adding to the overall total of £12,700 that has been collected since the festival’s inception in 2018. The success of this event is largely due to the generosity of the talented musicians, organisers, sound technicians, and venue staff who offer their services free of charge to maximize the impact on charity funds.

This year’s festival will feature performances by three bands: Musica, Get Carter, and The Laurel Canyon Appreciation Society, offering a diverse range of musical genres to cater to different tastes. The event remains a tribute to the late Phil Hunt, a guitarist and co-founder of the festival who bravely battled pancreatic cancer in 2019. It serves as a commemoration of Hunt and a nod to all individuals whose lives have been touched by cancer, emphasizing the importance of both fundraising and raising awareness.

Local fundraising coordinator Yasmin Bailey and her team of dedicated volunteers will be present throughout the day to provide assistance and information. Together with their mascot, a giant toy gorilla named Ramsden, they work tirelessly to ensure the success of RockthePav. Bailey expressed her gratitude towards her team and all the supporters, acknowledging the collaborative effort behind the scenes that makes the event possible.

The funds raised at the festival contribute to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, which has been funding crucial research projects since its establishment in 2004. The focus of these projects includes early diagnosis and treatment options to enhance survival rates for pancreatic cancer patients. The continuous efforts of the charity have garnered significant support, with a total sum of £69,152 raised locally to date, showcasing the community’s generosity and commitment to the cause.
