The Big Moon announce upcoming fourth album “Forever” and release lead single “Gravity”
The latest album from the quartet has been released four years following their previous record, Here Is Everything. Frontwoman Juliette Jackson explores different themes this time around, shifting her focus from the challenges of new motherhood and the pandemic to what comes after life’s significant moments. Forever delves into the aftermath of life’s milestones, influenced by a more profound realization of mortality when Jackson was diagnosed with a cholesteatoma – a noncancerous cyst in the eardrum – in 2024. The subsequent surgery resulted in permanent hearing loss in one ear, posing significant challenges for a songwriter like Jackson, whose identity and livelihood are intertwined with writing music.
Reflecting on her struggles, Jackson shares, “It was pretty much existential because writing songs is my job and my identity.” Initially finding it difficult to create new music, she found a breakthrough by changing her perspective. By envisioning a future where she would be healed and happy again, Jackson began writing songs for that imagined time ahead. This mental exercise of projecting herself into a hopeful future tricked her into a positive creative space, enabling her to navigate through her challenges and fears.
The lead single from the album, “Gravity,” captures the essence of this renewed perspective. Jackson reveals that the song was inspired by the fleeting moments of joy experienced while picking up her son from nursery, cherishing the heartfelt hugs she knew wouldn’t last forever. The track serves as a tribute to an enduring love that remains unbroken, always ready to come back together despite any distance or obstacles.
Recorded over a span of three weeks at Norfolk’s Bam Bam Studios, Forever was crafted with Sam Cohen (known for his work with Kevin Morby) co-producing alongside the band. According to bassist Celia Archer, the album’s overarching theme revolves around facing challenging situations and finding hope and strength within them. The songs on the record may touch on weighty subjects lyrically, thematically, and musically, but Jackson’s ability to infuse them with hope and resilience provides listeners with a sense of empowerment to confront their struggles and find their own sources of strength.
The band is gearing up for a tour in November, commencing in Birmingham on the 18th and making stops in various cities before concluding in Brixton on the 27th. Pre-sale tickets can be accessed through the album pre-order, with general sales opening on July 3rd. Additionally, The Big Moon will be performing as supporting acts for renowned artists like Alanis Morissette, Self Esteem, and Public Service Broadcasting during the summer.
With its release, Forever showcases a blend of introspective lyrics, evocative melodies, and an underlying message of hope and resilience. From the heartfelt reflections on life’s fleeting moments to the powerful messages of embracing challenges and finding strength within, The Big Moon’s latest offering is a testament to the transformative power of music in navigating through life’s complexities.
