80s Rock Band Releases New Album After 45 Years
Forty-five years since its inception, Stryper continues to push forward with the announcement of its 18th studio album, Throne of Thorns, slated for a September 25 release date. Accompanying this news is the debut of the album’s lead single, titled “Throne of Thorns,” granting fans an early glimpse into the band’s musical evolution.
The band expressed their excitement on Instagram, proclaiming, “NEW MUSIC AND PRE-ORDER FROM STRYPER! Stryper return with their 18th studio album: Throne Of Thorns, set for release on September 25th!” This new album marks another chapter in Stryper’s extraordinary journey.
Frontman Michael Sweet shared his perspective on the importance of creating music, likening it to a basic necessity in life. He stated, “If I don’t make music, I feel like I’m starving and I need to eat. That’s when I do a new project or start helping others with a project. But to me, it also just feels like a part of life. You know, like I get up every day and I have my coffee and I brush my teeth and I take a shower and music feels that way to me as well. It’s just such a part of my routine.”
Since its formation in 1980 in Orange County, California, Stryper has crafted a distinct identity within the hard rock and heavy metal landscape by interweaving powerful guitar riffs and anthemic melodies with Christian themes. Unlike many peers in the industry that delved into darker subject matter, Stryper stood out with their signature black-and-yellow stage attire, lyrics inspired by the Bible, and dynamic live performances. With hit songs like “Calling on You,” “Honestly,” and “Free,” the band broke into the mainstream through MTV and rock radio during the 1980s.
Despite the challenges of maintaining their unique sound, Stryper’s dedication to their Christian faith and musical vision has paid off. Sweet acknowledged the band’s unconventional approach, recognizing the difficulties they faced within the music industry. He reflected, “If we sang about girls and sex and drugs and all the typical stuff, we probably would have been at least twice, three times as big as we were. [But] we’re going to do something different and we did — and we’re the weirdos for it. We’re the odd man out. We’re not part of the club and we never will be. But you know what? I wouldn’t change a thing.”
In recent years, Stryper has continued to churn out new material and maintain an active touring schedule on a global scale. The forthcoming Throne of Thorns album follows their 2024 release, When We Were Kings, and marks their 18th studio album, solidifying their enduring presence in the hard rock realm.
With the release of the title track as a single and the album set to drop soon, Stryper remains a pivotal force in the metal scene, proving that after 45 years, they are still shaping the narrative of one of rock music’s most distinctive success stories.
