Dan Rickabus of The Crane Wives explores experimental soundscapes with dynamic new solo album

Dan Rickabus, a prominent drummer and percussionist from Grand Rapids, is set to unveil his new solo album titled “Ache in the Blooming” on May 29. The album presents a psychedelic and genre-defying approach, incorporating elements ranging from the energy of The Flaming Lips to an ambient vibe reminiscent of Philip Glass, as well as folk undertones and more.

In a recent interview, Rickabus expressed his hopes that the album would offer listeners an array of captivating content to stimulate their minds and ears, creating an expansive and imaginative experience. He emphasized that the album is intricately layered, delving into real emotions, catharsis, and the raw, imperfect human experience.

“Ache in the Blooming” features a stellar lineup of Michigan musicians, including guitarist Seth Bernard, bassist/keyboardist Max Lockwood, and cellist Hamilton Jordan. Additionally, Ian Gorman from La Luna Recording & Sound and The Lasso contributed in various capacities, enhancing the sonic tapestry of the album. The project took shape over a year-long process, meticulously crafted amidst The Crane Wives’ touring commitments and other collaborations.

Some of the songs on the album have roots dating back to 2019, while others were completed at Gorman’s Kalamazoo studio in late 2025. Following an initial three-day studio session in February 2025, the album was finalized in December of the same year during a subsequent studio session. Rickabus shared that scheduling studio time amidst the band’s busy itinerary was a challenge but a gratifying endeavor.

The richness of the album’s sound can be attributed to the contributions of the musicians involved, describing them as “one-of-a-kind luminary musicians and dear friends.” The collaboration between Rickabus, Bernard, and Lockwood in the studio brought an electrifying and unique dimension to the recordings, which were further enhanced by Hamilton’s cinematic and emotionally resonant additions.

Rickabus is gearing up for a series of album-release shows featuring a seven-piece band comprising the album’s contributors. The band, described as a “once-in-a-lifetime” ensemble, will bring the album to life on stage, capturing and expanding upon its essence in each live rendition. The upcoming shows, scheduled for June 3 in Traverse City and June 5 in Grand Rapids, promise an unforgettable musical experience.

In addition to his solo endeavors, Rickabus remains committed to The Crane Wives, embarking on both Western and Midwest tours in the coming months. Reflecting on the band’s schedule, Rickabus highlighted the importance of balancing musical pursuits with personal life experiences, reaffirming their dedication to creating meaningful music for their audience.

Rickabus’ single “No Cocoon” and another track from the new album, “The Lore,” were featured on a recent episode of the Local Spins Michigan Music Showcase. The radio show also showcased works by various Michigan artists, reflecting the vibrant and diverse music scene in the state.
