Abi Reimold announces her first new album in 10 years titled “Picking Stones,” featuring the track “Drinking Song.”
Last summer saw an exciting development for fans of Philly-based Abi Reimold, a previous standout as a Stereogum Artist To Watch, who unveiled their first track in almost a decade. The haunting folk ballad “High Tide” signaled a departure from Reimold’s rough-and-tumble indie rock singer-songwriter style showcased on their debut album Wriggling from 2016. However, as it turns out, there are more surprises in store for fans.
Reimold has now announced the arrival of their second album, Picking Stones, after a decade-long gap since their last release. Comprising eight tracks penned between 2019 and 2023, the album delves into themes of sorrow, infatuation, and tenacity, presenting a departure from the sound of “High Tide.” Collaborating with fellow musicians Zena Kay, Evan McGonagill, Evan Campbell, and Bill Magerr, the album was produced by Scott Stitzer. Describing the music as “country curious,” this unique blend is readily apparent on the lead single.
“Drinking Song” is a different kind of ballad, filled with rocking moments that lead to a heart-wrenching crescendo alongside a captivating guitar solo. What truly captures attention, however, are the evocative lyrics. “Holy ghost tells me I’m made for you/ At the bar I’ve been drinking for two/ Case in the fridge, how are you empty so soon?/ I don’t care if it’s 5 o’clock or if it’s noon.” These words paint a vivid picture of the scene: a bar. “I’ve been here before, so it’s not my first time/ Standing on stolen ground, living on borrowed time.” Another bar. “I don’t care what you do/ As long as you regret it too/ I’ll visit you in your sleep/ I’ll be the star of all your dreams.” The sheer impact of these lines is undeniable, making this track a promising preview of what awaits listeners on Picking Stones.
The tracklist for the album includes “Picking Stones,” “Drinking Song,” “Schedule II,” “Open to Suggestions,” “Stoned,” “Phasing,” “Destiny,” and “You’re Only Gay When You’re Drunk.” Additionally, Reimold has announced tour dates with Emily Yacina, including stops in Philadelphia, Richmond, Carrboro, and Atlanta. Picking Stones is scheduled for release on 3/3, promising a fresh exploration of Reimold’s evolving musical journey.
In conclusion, the anticipation for Picking Stones continues to build with the release of standout singles like “Drinking Song,” showcasing Reimold’s growth and experimentation in their musical style. With a diverse range of themes and emotions explored in the album, fans can expect a rewarding and introspective listening experience when the record drops.
