Circus Avatar Takes Over Oslo
Avatar, the Swedish metal band, took over Oslo as they headlined the Sentrum Scene on a chilly February evening during their In the Airwaves EU 26 Tour. Alien Weaponry from New Zealand and Norwegian band Agabas opened the show, with Alien Weaponry presenting a unique blend of groove and thrash metal with te reo Māori lyrics.
Although unfamiliar with Alien Weaponry before the show, the live performance impressed many with its ritualistic chanting and powerful bass tones that captivated the audience. With an initial subdued atmosphere, Alien Weaponry managed to win over the crowd with their distinct style and sound.
On the other hand, Avatar’s eccentric and theatrical approach to metal was on full display during their set. Known for their larger-than-life clown frontman Johannes Eckerström and their infectious stage presence, Avatar delivered an unforgettable performance. The stage was set with a classic circus vibe, complete with a drum kit center stage, microphones on either side, and a backdrop resembling a circus tent.
As Avatar took the stage, the audience was immediately drawn in by the thunderstorm effects and the band’s energetic performance of ‘Captain Goat.’ The band then launched into fan-favorite songs like ‘Under Silence in the Age of Apes’ and ‘The Eagle Has Landed,’ captivating the crowd with their synchronized headbanging and engaging stage presence.
Throughout the show, Avatar’s interaction with the audience was a highlight, with Johannes Eckerström’s playful banter keeping the crowd entertained. The band’s performance of ‘Bloody Angel’ saw a comedic interlude as a stagehand appeared with a cymbal on his head, adding an element of surprise and humor to the show.
Midway through the set, Avatar showcased their versatility by incorporating a piano into the performance for the emotional ballad ‘Howling at the Waves.’ Johannes took a moment to connect with the audience, sharing the band’s challenging day and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to perform.
As the show progressed, Avatar’s stage presence continued to impress, culminating in the epic performance of ‘Legend of the King.’ The band’s guitarist took a seat on a throne, dressed as a king, adding an extra layer of theatrics to the performance.
Overall, Avatar’s performance at Sentrum Scene showcased their ability to entertain and engage the audience. With a mix of humor, theatricality, and powerful metal music, Avatar delivered a memorable show that left a lasting impression on all in attendance.
