Incubus is currently in the studio working on their ninth album, as shared by lead singer Brandon Boyd in a recent social media post capturing him laying down vocals for the upcoming record. The band’s next album has been rumored to be titled “Something in the Water,” following their last release, 8, in April 2017, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The 8 album was a significant milestone for Incubus, marking a period of transition and creativity for the band after the departure of bassist Ben Kenney due to health reasons. The record presented a raw and stripped-down sound compared to their previous album, If Not Now, When? (2011), showcasing tracks like “Nimble Bastard” and “State of the Art” that displayed a renewed urgency and energy. While 8 received mixed reviews from critics, fans appreciated the return to a more guitar-driven approach and praised the album’s cohesion and vitality.

Despite the challenges faced during the 8 album cycle, such as lineup changes and personal struggles, Incubus maintained a strong presence in the music scene through consistent touring, offering fans a blend of classic hits and newer material. Their live performances showcased a mix of nostalgia and evolution, with fan-favorite songs like “Drive,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Pardon Me” alongside tracks from their latest album.

In 2019, Incubus released the single “Into the Summer,” signaling a more relaxed and flexible creative direction for the band. This standalone release hinted at Incubus’ shift towards a song-by-song approach in the streaming era, moving away from traditional album cycles. The band’s ability to adapt to the changing music landscape and their willingness to experiment with new formats kept them connected with their audience during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the early 2020s, Incubus faced both obstacles and opportunities for reinvention. While navigating lineup changes and personal growth, the band released “Morning View XXIII” in 2023, a re-recorded version of their iconic album “Morning View” from 2001. The decision to re-record the album at the original recording location provided fans with a fresh perspective on a classic release, showcasing the band’s evolution and maturity over the years.

Lineup stability gradually returned as Ben Kenney rejoined the band, while Brandon Boyd and Mike Einziger pursued solo and creative projects outside of Incubus, influencing the band’s evolving artistic identity. By the mid-2020s, Incubus had solidified their position as both a legacy act and a dynamic creative force, appealing to a wide range of listeners through their global tours and diverse musical influences.

As fans eagerly anticipate a new album from Incubus, the band’s deliberate and authentic approach to releasing new material continues to prioritize creativity and inspiration over commercial pressures. Incubus’ journey from 8 to the present day reflects a band that values maturity and growth while staying true to their unique sound and identity in a rapidly changing music industry.
