Ray Cordova is a seasoned member of the Albuquerque punk rock scene, along with his bandmates Brandon Davis on guitar, Alex “Irish” Cantwell on bass, and Matt Chaves on drums. They have collectively played in a variety of bands across the city and country, establishing a reputation for their energetic performances. This year, they collaborated with the European punk rock group Grazer Grant from Graz, Austria, to release a split album titled Roadside Memorial La Bajada/Grazer Grant Brutalismis. The album showcases a range of punk subgenres, incorporating fast, catchy riffs with raw and powerful moments that hit hard. Cordova, a veteran in the music industry, is excited about the upcoming La Bajada record release show at Flock of Moons Brewing, featuring the hardcore punk trio Smorgasborg.
When asked to describe Roadside Memorial’s sound, Cordova explained that the band blends melodic hardcore with elements of ska, reggae, and Oi punk. Their music is influenced by New York-style hardcore punk mixed with early ’80s melodic L.A. and Orange County sounds. Brandon’s eclectic guitar style, which includes bluesy and traditional American hard rock influences, complements Cordova’s vocal melodies. The band’s music features heavy-hitting bass lines and solid drumming, creating a dynamic and engaging sound for their audience.
Regarding their preferred venues, Cordova expressed a fondness for all-ages shows at places like Ren’s Den and Black Wall Gallery, where the youthful and enthusiastic crowd motivates their performances. He also enjoys playing at breweries during matinees, creating family-friendly environments for their fans. Cordova appreciates any venue that welcomes them, from nightclubs like Launchpad and Sister Bar to house parties where the band’s roots lie.
The lyrical content of Roadside Memorial’s music touches on various themes, from dark narratives like a serial killer falling in love to reflections on personal relationships and loyalty. Cordova draws inspiration from a diverse range of bands and genres, citing influences such as Motown, The Ramones, Black Flag, British Oi bands, Bad Brains, and extreme metal. He also credits sax player Jessica Mills for adding a unique element to the band’s rhythm section, known as “The Brasstronauts.”
Reflecting on their favorite shows, Cordova recalls memorable performances at venues like Launchpad and Ren’s Den, where the energy and enthusiasm of the audience made the experience unforgettable. He emphasizes that every show is special in its own way, highlighting the joy of performing and connecting with their fans. The band invites music enthusiasts to join them at the listening party for their new vinyl release of La Bajada on November 22 at Flock of Moons Brewing, where attendees can enjoy the music and celebrate their collaboration with Grazer Grant from Austria.
